Hyundai Showcases Fuel-Cell Technology with Nexo Record

Hyundai once again highlighted the capabilities of its hydrogen fuel cell vehicles with a new record that was achieved by a Hyundai Nexo. This further enhances the public perception of the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology in the broader context of zero-emission vehicle technologies of the future.

The record feat was achieved in a Nexo SUV. The vehicle broke the world record for the longest distance traveled in a hydrogen-powered vehicle on a single tank. The vehicle covered about 484 miles in a journey across France and even exceeded its own projected range.

Bertrand Piccard, a Swiss aeronaut, balloonist and environmentalist who has been in the news as the founder of Solar Impulse, the first round-the-world solar-powered flight, was chosen to helm the Nexo for the record breaking attempt. Piccard has also made the first nonstop balloon journey across the globe without fuel in 1999 aboard the carbon-composite Breitling Orbiter 3.

Piccard started his journey in the Nexo from a hydrogen fueling station in Sarreguemines, France on November 25 and arrived the at the Musee de l’Air et de l’space in Le Bourget on the next day. When he reached his destination, he had more than 30 miles of range remaining. At the Musee de l’Air et de l’space in Le Bourget, a number of eminent dignitaries including federal elected officials and even members of royalty, including the Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco joined him. The goal of the record breaking attempt was to highlight hydrogen as a viable clean-energy solution for the future.

“With this adventure, we have proven that with clean technologies, we no longer need revolutionary experimental prototypes to break records,” Piccard said. “Everyone can now do it with standard zero-emission vehicles. A new era in performance is beginning, for the benefit of environmental protection.”

Earlier in 201, Hyundai had nominated the Nexo to undergo full crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US, thus making the model the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle to be evaluated by IIHS. It performed outstandingly in the tests, earning a Top Safety Pick+ award.

Using its advanced air purification system that filters out very fine dust, Hyundai said the Nexo purified the same volume of air breathed by 23 adults each day during the trip. A combustion engine powered vehicle would have emitted around 245 pounds of CO2 during the same trip, according to Hyundai.

Hyundai does want to draw attention to hydrogen as one solution for sustainable mobility. Back in 2012, Hyundai had made what it called the first production hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle that was available for lease in the form of the ix35 Fuel Cell crossover. It has recently unveiled its retro-inspired HDC-6 Neptune, a fuel cell-powered semi-truck concept, indicating that it might be working on a fuel-cell commercial vehicle.

BKT Develops Special Tire for Record Breaking Tractor

BKT is in the news for developing a tire that has been specially designed for a record-breaking Fastrac tractor. The tractor which is made by JCB had entered the Guinness World Records by setting a new speed record of 135.191 mph (217.568 km/h) and BKT played a key role in helping JCB to achieve the record-breaking feat by using its expertise to develop special tires for the 1,016 hp Fastrac tractor.

JCB had made innovative modifications to the chassis and powertrain as part of its drive to break the record. The tractor was fitted with a tire that was specially developed by BKT. The tire had the capability to tolerate high-speed runs in excess of speeds of 150 mph (241 km/h).

To develop the customized tire, BKT’s team worked closely with JCB’s engineering team to create a tractor tire that was technically advanced enough to handle extreme speeds and loads. The tire that BKT supplied for the tractor is a specially constructed 400/80 R 28 RIDEMAX IT 696, and was based on a tire that is normally used for industrial applications and is capable of tolerating speeds of up to 65 km/h on paved surfaces.

The most notable features of this tire include outstandingly low rolling resistance and this in turn translates into greater fuel efficiency thus offering both economic and environmental advantages.

Lamborghini Veneno Fetches Record Price of USD 8.27 Million

A very rare Lamborghini Veneno fetched a record price of CHF8.2 million (US$8.27 million) in a short span of seven minutes at a Bonhams auction that was held in Geneva. The price set a new world record price in terms of the price tag for a Lamborghini, after a fierce bidding war. This broke the previous record of 2.34 million euros (about USD 2.55 million) that a 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV had fetched at an auction in Paris in February 2017.

The Lamborghini Veneno was the only roadster of the nine “ultimate” Lamborghinis that were produced in 2014 to mark the golden or 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini brand. It is finished in off-white with a beige interior and has been only driven for only 325 kilometers (about 202 miles).

The bidding started off with a bid of CHF3 million and drew six enthusiastic collectors. The estimated price before the auction was a low one of CHF 5.2 million.

The Veneno is one of the 25 supercars which form The Supercar Collection. The collection was offered for sale without reserve by the State of Geneva. According to reports, the collection was part of the items which were confiscated from Teodorin Nguema Obiang, vice president of Equatorial Guinea, who was indicted on corruption, and other charges.

In 2017, he received a three-year suspended jail term for corruption from a French court. In February this year, Swiss prosecutors dropped the charges of financial wrongdoing against him but confiscated his luxury cars.

Obiang is the potential successor to his father Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled Equatorial Guinea for the past 40 years.

Another car which was part of the collection and fetched a high price was a 2014 Koenigsegg One:1 which was one of just six produced by the company and realized CHF4.6 million.

All the 25 supercars belonging to the collection were sold and fetched a total price of CHF23.4 million. The proceeds from the auction will be used to finance social projects in Equatorial Guinea.

MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 Becomes Fastest Street Legal Tire in the World

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire has earned the distinction of becoming the fastest street legal tire in the world. The tire was used for a Bugatti Chiron which became the first near production car in the world to speed past the 300mph barrier, with its independently verified top speed reaching 304.773mph (490.484km/h).The record was achieved with Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace at the wheel of the Chiron during August at Bugatti’s Ehra-Lessien test track in Northern Germany.

The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires which were used for the vehicle that broke the record were not modified much in comparision to regular OE tires. They sported the ‘BG’ mark meaning that they could only be used for Bugatti cars, and they are completely street legal. The only modification that was made was that the casing belts of the tires used on the record-breaking Chiron were specially reinforced to handle the 5,300g which the tires needed to tolerate at such extremely high speeds.

Michelin developed the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires which were made specifically for the Bugatti Chiron, at its Technology Center in Ladoux, France, and its site in Charlotte SC, US. At the Carlotte site, specialist machinery was used to conduct extreme tests on the Michelin tires. To check whether the tires could withstand the extreme speeds of the Bugatti Chiron, Michelin used a test machine which was designed to test tires fitted to the Space Shuttle, and can test tires which are running at speeds upto 510km/h.

Speaking about the tires, Pierre Chandezon, Bugatti tire design team leader at Michelin said that Michelin was very proud to have played a part in achieving the record. He called the achievement an outcome of the close ties between Bugatti and Michelin which go back almost 20 years. This longtsanding relationship gave Bugatti the confidence needed to allow Michelin to develop the sole OE tires for the Chiron.

The engineering teams of Michelin and Bugatti collaborated on the joint development of the tires and the chassis of the Bugatti Chiron used to achieve the record, leveraging the most cutting edge casing designs, materials and production techniques. This simultaneous co-development of the tire and the car further optimized the tire performance for the Bugatti Chiron.

In addition to the benefits of speed capability and high safety levels that the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires offer, they also contribute to the comfort of the car on the road so that the owners of a Bugatti Chiron can enjoy their supercar in all driving conditions.

Bugatti Breaks 300 mph Barrier with the Chiron

Bugatti set a world record by becoming the first series manufacturer to break the 300 mph barrier with a Chiron that is almost production ready. The car thus became the first first hyper sports car to break the hitherto unbroken 300-mile-per-hour barrier (482.80 km/h). Simultaneously, Bugatti set a new TÜV-certified speed record by achieving a top speed of 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h).

Commenting on the achievement, Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti said that Bugatti has again managed to demonstrate what it is capable of with this new record of the Chiron. He went on to add that with this new world record, Bugatti will now shift its focus to other areas and withdraw from the race with brands like Koenigsegg to produce the fastest serial production cars.

The record-breaking driver

The feat was achieved by Le Mans champion and Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace when he attained the top speed of exactly 490.484 km/h (304.773 mph) on August 2, 2019 on the test track at Ehra-Lessien in Lower Saxony. Wallace said that he felt very safe in the Chiron even in these high speed ranges. He advanced to the top speed from 300 km/h in 50 km/h increments to ensure that everything went well and that the Chiron had the optimal balance of lift and downforce. With ideal track and weather conditions and great support from the team, the record was broken at the first attempt.

Wallace drove one lap to condition the Chiron, and then accelerated out of the north curve to 200 km/h to reach top speed on the 8.8 kilometer straight stretch of the track. At a precisely defined braking point, he then decreased the speed of the Chiron back to 200 km/h to drive through the south bend, giving himself a distance of two kilometres in which to do so.

“I went at full throttle from the start for approximately 70 seconds. It was important for me to be out of the bend at 200 km/h in order to reach top speed on the straight. That required the very highest level of concentration,” said the new record-holder, who covered 136 meters in one second.

This is not the first time that Andy Wallace has set a speed record: in 1998, he achieved a speed of 391 km/h (243 mph) in a McLaren F1 on the same track, which was also a record.
The world record Chiron.

In order to achieve the record breaking feat, a team of engineers drawn from various disciplines, helmed by Bugatti’s Head of Development Stefan Ellrott worked on a pre-production vehicle of a Chiron derivative. They not only made aerodynamic improvements, but also focused a lot on safety. Andy Wallace was held in place by six-point belts and protected by an additional safety cell.

The Bugatti team received able support from Italian race specialist Dallara and tire maker Michelin, who collaborated with Bugatti on the project. Michelin has been a logstanding partner of Bugatti’s and ensured that the tires of the vehicle had the necessary grip and stability. The Michelin high-speed tires that are already used on the Chiron were again reinforced, especially in the case of the belts to handle the 5300 G, while still being street legal. We have to remember that the tires rotate up to 4,100 times in one minute. Prior to the attempt to break the record, the tires were subjected to extensive test bench trials at speeds of up to 511 km/h in the United States. They underwent rigorous quality controls even after production, with each tire X-rayed to optimize even the smallest details. The world record vehicle was only fitted with the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires directly before the record run.

Prior to the attempt, the Bugatti engineering team also tested the engine’s performance and the interaction between engine, gearbox and chassis during various maneuvers as even the slightest changes can have a huge effect in this speed range.

“After all the calculations and tests, we felt sure the record was within our grasp. We had the technology under control at an early stage. But a world record attempt on an open track can have a few surprises in store. We were lucky today and everything went well,” says Head of Development Stefan Ellrott with immense satisfaction.

The record track
The Ehra-Lessien high-speed track in Lower Saxony is 50 meters above sea level and unlike tracks at higher altitudes like those in Nevada, has several drawbacks. The vehicle has to apply more force due to the higher air density, and at high speeds of over 400 km/h, driving it is like driving against a wall.

“Air pressure, air density and temperature are very important for high-speed driving and can make a difference of up to 25 km/h, depending on the altitude,” said Stefan Ellrott. Despite this drawback, the team still opted for the test track in Ehra-Lessien as this track offered the greatest possible safety.

It is the only track where safety standards for high-speed tests are really high with crash barriers lining the 21-kilometer three-lane highway and rescue services being available at the north and south ends. The carriageway was cleaned with special mats prior the road test in order to pick up stones and grit.

The record run was recorded by a sealed GPS box, and the certificate stating that as of August 2019, Bugatti is the first manufacturer to produce a car that runs faster than 300 mph was issued by SGS-TÜV Saar.
Bugatti has achieved other world records on this track with the Chiron. In 2017, former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya drove a Chiron from 0 to 400 to 0 km/h on this test track in 41.96 seconds – the shortest run so far. Bugatti used the Veyron 16.4 to set speed records for production vehicles in 2005 and 2010, and in 2013 the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse set the record as the fastest roadster.

Winkelmann concluded by saying that Bugatti hyper sports cars do not just exhibit first-class performance but also offer absolute exclusivity, luxury, unmatched beauty and a high level of automotive craftsmanship.

Nissan Patrol Breaks GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for Largest Synchronized Car Dance

The Nissan Patrol has broken another GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest Synchonised Car Dance. Nissan conducted an activation as part of which it had the largest number of cars moving together within a formation. As many as 180 Nissan Patrols were used in the attempt to break the record as they drove in a synchronized routine to take on the shape of a giant desert falcon. This marks the third time that the Nissan Patrol has achieved a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title.

This new record was achieved at the Dubai Rugby 7s stadium, and managed to break the previous Guinness world record by 36 cars. The record breaking attempt was helmed by international racing driver Axcil Jefferies. Two concentric lines of cars drove a total distance of 1, 476 meters in opposite directions around the outline of a falcon. The shape formed by the 180 Nissan Patrols taking part in the attempt measured 176.5 metres by 225 metres. When it was viewed from above, the activation replicated the shape a giant falcon that took wing over the sands of the Arabian desert.

This was the third record that the Nissan Patrol has earned. In September 2015, the Patrol broke the record for the fastest ascent of a 100 meter sand dune by a car, by scaling the dune in just 4.9 seconds. The first record it earned was when the Nissan Patrol successfully towed the world’s heaviest aircraft for more than 164 feet (50 meters) at Sharjah International Airport in the UAE in August 2013.

The attempt to break the record was also a part of Nissan’s official celebration of adding three new editions to the Nissan Patrol family this month. The Patrol Safari Falcon, Gazelle and Gazelle-X models were developed exclusively for customers in the Middle East and are available only in this region. The names of the new cars also inspired the shape formed during the record-breaking synchronised car dance.

Commenting on the new record, Kalyana Sivagnanam, Regional Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Nissan AMI and President of Nissan Middle East said that Nissan is committed to bringing its customers ‘innovation that excites’ and the record making attempt was in keeping with this spirit. He added that the Patrol family holds a unique and special place in the hearts of customers in the Middle East, with year-on-year sales increases across the entire range. He felt that the recent launches of the Patrol Falcon, Gazelle and Gazelle-X will reinforce the Patrol’s proud legacy as one of the only true all-terrain vehicles of its time, and the new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title would further reinforce the Patrol’s legendary status in the region.

“What makes this achievement even more special is the fact that everyone who took part in the record-breaking attempt was Nissan staff” added Juergen Schmitz, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East. “It was a great privilege to give our employees the opportunity to take part in this landmark achievement. We were so pleased by the enthusiasm displayed by everyone, and single-minded determination they demonstrated towards achieving this goal.”

The Nissan Patrol range is highly popular in the Middle East. In Nissan Middle East’s Financial Year 17 (April 2016 – March 2017), the Patrol’s market share increased by 11.4 percent compared to the previous year, with the Patrol becoming the best-selling full-size SUV in the UAE. From 2011, sales of Patrol have increased fourfold, with market share being up by 167 percent. In the first half of Nissan Middle East’s current financial year (April – September 2018), there was a year-on-year increase in sales of the Patrol Safari family of 30 percent across the Middle East region (excluding KSA).

This is the sixth such record that Nissan Middle East has achieved, with three being earned by the Patrol. The most recent record was achieved when driver Masato Kawabata (Japan) achieved the fastest ever vehicle drift. Kawabata reached an impressive speed of 304.96 km/h (189.49 mi/h), while driving a Nissan GT-R Nismo during an event at Fujairah International Airport in April 2016.

Pirelli Sets New Record at Nurburgring-Nordschleife for Ninth Straight Year

Pirelli has been instrumental in helping set a new lap at Nurburgring-Nordschleife for the ninth straight year, continuing a tradition that it began in 2010. From that year onwards, every year, a car fitted with Pirelli tires has set a record and there have been eight records set so far at the track that is known to racing fans as ‘Green Hell’. This year, a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ which was fitted with P Zero Trofeo R, a tire that is suitable for road use as well set a lap record of 6m 44.97s. This is the second such record that a Lamborghini has achieved in the past three years. The previous record was established by the Aventador LP-750-4 SV, which achieved a time under the seven-minute mark, followed by the Huracan Performante (a record that was unbroken until September 2017).

The latest V12-powered Lamborghini model will be factory fitted with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires as the standard fitment, while the P Zero Trofeo R tires that played such a crucial role in the record breaking attempt can be selected as optional equipment. Pirelli developed variants of both these tires specifically for the Aventador SVJ, working closely with the engineering team from Lamborghini engineers, the outcome of this close partnership being tires whose performance have been maximized by adapting the characteristics of the tires to enhance the performance of the vehicle.

One fact that the engineers kept in mind as a reference when they developed the tire was the lap time at the Nardo handling circuit in Italy. Here, the Aventador SVJ which was fitted with the new P Zero Corsa tires was able to shave off two seconds per lap when compared to the P Zero Corsa tires that were used for the previous Aventador SV. In the case of the new Lamborghini, the key barrier during the development process was to optimize the four-wheel drive system for four-wheel steering. The tires also had to guarantee a consistent rotation, for the optimal distribution of torque so that there is minimal stress on the Haldex clutch system.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife is one of the most popular races for those who are passionate about motorsports as well as for the leading automotive manufacturers in the who use this 20.6 kilometer track as a laboratory to refine their most performance-oriented models. Pirelli also uses the Nordschleife track to fine-tune the different variants of the P Zero tyres, which have now achieved as many as 1028 specific homologations, and are customized based on the requirements of manufacturers who are keen to ensure that their cars have tires that complement the performance of their models. Thus, every car ends up with its very own Pirelli P Zero tire, which can be easily recognized with a specific marking on the sidewall, like ‘L’ for Lamborghini.

Bugatti Chiron Sets Record for Fastest Production Car

Speed records are meant to be broken and Bugatti now has yet another record to its name with a Chiron breaking the record for the fastest 0-400 kph-0 run ever, in a time of just 41.96 seconds. In this time, the cover which was driven by ace Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya covered 3112 meters.

It is not just the speed record achieved by the 1500 horsepower, USD 2.5 million Chiron that is impressive but its stopping power as well. The car went from 0-400 kph and back again to 0 in just 42 seconds. While the car accelerated to 400 kph in 32.6 seconds, it needed only 9.3 seconds to come to a standstill when the brakes were applied. This is the same time that a Fiat 126 needs to reach 0 from 100 mph when decelerating.

The attempt to break the record was carefully supervised and conducted by the automotive technology company SGS-TÜV Saar and Montoya opted not to use protective clothing, including a helmet, during his run.

Commenting on the record, Montoya said that the Chiron is a super sports car that needs full attention from the driver. At the same time, it provides motorists with a feeling of security and reliability.

Bugatti is currently showcasing the record-breaking car at the Frankfurt motor show this week. Bugatti will display a special-edition Chiron with number 42 on its grille.

Toyota Land Speed Cruiser Becomes “World’s Fastest SUV”

A Toyota Land Speed Cruiser SUV has broken the previous record for the “World’s Fastest SUV”, exceeding it by over 19 mph. It attained a GPS-verified and video-documented speed of 230.02 mph, according to a press release issued by Toyota. The vehicle was driven by former NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. The custom Land Speed Cruiser was fitted with a 2,000-horsepower engine.

“At Toyota, we like to say ‘Let’s Go Places,’ and the Land Speed Cruiser goes places faster than any SUV before it. This was an aspirational goal that inspired us all,” said Steve Appelbaum, Toyota Motor Sales national engagement marketing manager.
He added that the company achieved the record by using the same kind of innovative outlook and determination that have long been a part of Toyota’s soul. Toyota had launched the Land Speed Cruiser, at the 2016 SEMA show. The model had initially been a stock production model before it was heavily modified by a team of engineers at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center (MTC). The Toyota Land Cruiser is an iconic model that has now been in production for over 60 years now.

MTC Manager, Chuck Wade said that the previous World’s Fastest SUV record at 211 mph was extremely fast. This is why Toyota came up with a really, ultra-powerful Land Cruiser, to try and break the record.

The team used the Land Cruiser’s production 5.7-liter, V8 engine as the base model and then added a pair of volleyball-sized Garrett turbochargers which could add upto 55 PSI of boost. In order to help the engine cope with extreme force induction, the team at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center (MTC) made the interiors of the engine stronger with several components including stronger pistons and rods and a custom-made intake manifold. This helped the powerful modified V8 engine to produce the 2,000 horsepower needed for the vehicle’s record-breaking run. A custom racing transmission which could tolerate the high speeds and power was paired with the engine.

Driving the vehicle at such high speeds was also a challenge as high speeds affect a vehicle’s aerodynamics and stability. Hence, the modified Land Speed Cruiser sits lower to the pavement, and this reduces the amount of turbulent air that is allowed to pass underneath the vehicle. The frame was tweaked a little in order to maintain optimal suspension geometry, and was narrowed by 3 inches to accommodate the wider Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires.

The record breaking attempt was carried out at the Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California, as it is one of the very few places in the U.S. where supersonic flight is allowed, and has a two-and-a-half-mile paved runway that was perfect for making the attempt.

“At 225 mph, the thing was wandering a little bit. All I could think was that Craig said, ‘No matter what, just keep your foot in it,’ and we got 230 mph,” Edwards recounted from behind a huge grin after setting the record. “It’s safe to say that this is the fastest SUV on the planet.
