Groupe PSA and Punch Powertrain technology are planning to collaborating on making the powertrain technology that would be needed for future electrified models made by Groupe PSA. The two companies are exploring the possibility of making Punch’s powertrains at one of Groupe PSA’s plants.
Groupe PSA has been working hard on expanding its range of electrified models which can include (Mild-hybrid (MHEV), Pure Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)). The goal is for the PSA Group to develop an electrified offering that would cover 100 per cent of its range by 2025.
The main reason Groupe PSA is working with Belgium based Punch Powertrain is that Punch has significant expertise in the design of cutting-edge and patented dual clutch transmissions. Such transmissions need less components, and the use of such a design would mean that the transmission system would be lighter and more compact. These vehicles would also deliver outstanding performance and a very favorable fuel economy without the costs being too high. The PSA Group is planning to use the next iteration of Punch’s designs, with a 48V motor configuration, in its vehicles.
Punch Powertrain is headquartered in Belgium, and has offices in China and India. The company currently delivers CVT transmissions to a large number of OEMs from its factories in Nanjing (China) and Sint-Truiden (Belgium). Punch Powertrain has a five-year investment plan, according to which the company’s goal is to increase its capacity at the plants in China and Europe from 1.2 million to 3 million units by 2020.
