A recent survey conducted by the website CarGurus revealed young drivers in this digital age are highly technologically savvy but are not aware about basic automotive components. As many as 10 per cent of those who participated in the study thought that chassis is a type of alcoholic drink.
About 49 per cent lacked basic knowledge about the cars they drove and generally opted for a vehicle just on the basis of looks. They generally ask their parents for advice about the technical aspects.
As part of the study, 2,000 car buyers were asked questions that tested their car knowledge. Over 50 per cent of the participants in the survey thought that an automatic transmission was related to radio while almost 30 per cent confused the ABS anti-lock braking system with IBS, a chronic bowel condition.
About 35 per cent of young drivers depend on parents for advice, both with regard to technical issues that need to be fixed and the model they should choose when purchasing a car.
CarGurus felt that though information is now available at our fingertips, young people are confused about what is important and what is note.
Sarah Welch, a spokesperson for CarGurus, said the process of shopping for a car is highly complex and though a lot of information is available, they struggle to identify what is important and what isn’t.
