BorgWarner has made a new dual-clutch module ideal for use in sports cars and other high-torque and high-rev applications. This unit will be a part of a new dual-clutch module range that will be featured in the latest transmissions from ZF, which supplies transmissions to leading manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW. The module facilitates shifts within fractions of a second with practically no ibnterruption when it comes to the torque.
Initially, Borg-warner’s new transmission technology will be used in the dual-clutch transmission for V6 and V8 biturbo petrol engines and a V8 biturbo diesel engine for major brands. It is also likely to be used in upcoming hybrid applications. This dual-clutch module was specifically designed for high-performance sports cars and is the company’s first European-built dual-clutch module. It was developed and produced in Germany and the main benefits it offers are improved durability, higher reliability and better shift feel.
Commenting on the new module, Robin Kendrick, president and general manager, BorgWarner Transmission Systems said that Borg Warner was pleased to expand the company’s business collaboration with ZF through supply of its state-of-the-art dual-clutch modules.
He added that BorgWarner drew upon its extensive expertise in engineering transmission components to come up with this modular high-efficiency solution that is notable for its light-weight design and compactness. These features make the dual-clutch module an ideal solution for sports cars and other high-torque and high-rev applications.
BorgWarner’s innovative new dual-clutch module family is available with torque capacities of 570, 700 and 1,000 Nm. The advanced solution also uses high-energy wet friction materials with a special groove design to provide greater heat resistance, minimize spin losses, increase high torque capacity and reliable operation over the transmission’s lifetime. In combination with its tunable launch characteristics, the dual-clutch module contributes to fuel economy which is similar to that offered by single-clutch automated gearboxes and shift quality that is as good as the best conventional automatic transmissions.
