Abu Dhabi to Implement Road Toll System from October 15

Abu Dhabi has revealed plans to implement the road toll system for individual vehicles from October 15. The system that would implement tolls across four toll gates that regulate entry into Abu Dhabi across all four bridges will be jointly implemented by the Department of Transport-Abu Dhabi (DoT) and the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). All vehicles passing the toll gates have to be registered in the Abu Dhabi Toll System through either the DoT website or any of the Abu Dhabi Government Services Centers (Tamm) during working hours.

The plan to implement the road toll in Abu Dhabi aligns with the Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) for Abu Dhabi after the installation of four toll gates on major bridges – Al Maqta Bridge, Mussafah Bridge, Sheikh Zayed Bridge and Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bridge as part of the drive to reduce congestion during peak hours and thus to increase the efficiency of the local transport sector. The two organizations will be shortly announcing the next phase of the registration process in the toll system for company vehicles and fleets.

Motorists can register their vehicle through the DoT website by clicking on the clicking on the toll system button and opting for the registration page, after which they should follow the subsequent steps and register their vehicle with their Emirates ID.

In the case of vehicles having Abu Dhabi license plates, there will be no charges for registration before October 15, 2019 as they would be automatically registered in the toll system. Motorists will get their account details through an SMS that would be sent to the mobile number that they have registered with Abu Dhabi Police.

Vehicles having Abu Dhabi license plates that are registered after October 15, 2019, and those from other emirates will be charged an amount of AED 100 per vehicle of which AED50 would be credited to their account.

Motorists who own vehicles registered in other emirates also need to log into their accounts and register manually via the website following which they need to add their vehicle/s and pay the registration fee of Dh100 per vehicle before they try to cross the toll gates.

With regard to fines, motorists who cross toll gates with a non-registered vehicle will have a grace period of 10 working days after which they have to pay a fine of AED 100 for the first day, AED 200 for the second day, and Dh400 for the third and subsequent days, up to a maximum of AED 10,000. The toll during peak hours will be Dh4 for every pass from Saturday to Thursday (7am – 9am and 5pm – 7pm). The toll fee will be AED 2 during off-peak hours, on Fridays, and during public holidays. The toll collection system will be operational 24/7, and the daily maximum fee would be AED 16 per vehicle.
