Bentley Motors is marking its centenary year by focusing on a more sustainable approach. The company has set up what the largest solar-powered car port in the UK at its Crewe facilty. Bit would also ensure that all of the electricity used at the factory headquarters in Crewe, is solar or green energy approved.
Bentley hopes to reduce its level of CO2 emissions by 3,300 tons on an annual basis by setting up 10,000 solar panels which have an output of 2.7 Megawatts of power. Bentley has spent a significant amount on investment in these solar panels, which cover 1,378 car parking spaces, or an area equivalent to two football pitches. Back in 2013, the company had already installed 20,815 solar panels on the factory roof. Along with the panels used for the carport, these panels now generate 7.7 megawatts of solar energy. Bentley now claims that it has installed the UK’s largest ever solar-powered car port.
Commenting on this feat, Bentley’s Member of the Board for Manufacturing, Peter Bosch said that the automaker will continue to focus on new initiatives that reinforce its commitment to the environment. They range from the development of alternative powertrain technologies in future models to award-winning work related to reducing the environmental impact of the Crewe factory.
Bosch added, “This solar installation is another example of how we can make our factory more sustainable by using technological innovation. This helps us produce extraordinary cars with responsibly-sourced materials in an efficient manner, while continually striving to reduce the company’s environmental impact.”
Other automakers have followed Bentley’s example. The Rolls-Royce factory, which was designed by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw was developed with a view to have as little impact on the environment as possible, with regard to every aspect ranging from the construction materials and methods used, to the landscaping and production processes.
UK government’s official advisers have urged industries to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050, and both Bentley and Rolls-Royce are definitely making great progress in this regard.
