Vehicles with keyless entry are particularly vulnerable to hacking. The concept of digital hacking of key fobs is one that is of great concern to motorists. Tesla has now come up with a new security feature that will make life more difficult for hackers by adding an extra layer of cybersecurity. Those who own a Tesla can take advantage of the company’s new “PIN to drive” feature for greater peace of mind regarding the security of their vehicles. This feature will make it impossible for a user to drive a Tesla model unless he enters the correct PIN (personal identification number on the infotainment screen. It is possible to activate this feature through the Controls and Safety & Security sub-menus that owners can access and create their very own PIN.
Tesla had recently upgraded the key fob cryptography for the Model S so that it is harder to hack and to match the standards for the Model X. Tesla offers an upgrade for Model S owners who have an older key fob.
Another company which has is working on a similar initiative is Volkswagen. The Group is developing its own over-the-air update system which will be available to use in future models from Volkswagen brands like Porsche, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen.
