Wabco, the leading global supplier of braking control systems and other advanced technologies that improve the safety, efficiency and connectivity of commercial vehicles, today announced a global long-term agreement to supply its next generation automated manual transmission (AMT) control technology to Daimler, one of the world’s largest commercial vehicle producers.
Wabco will work on the development and launch of its next-generation AMT control technology in Daimler‘s global truck and bus series production. Wabco said that its new gearbox control unit has a stronger, more compact design and lighter weight. It can thus reduce noise levels, optimize gear shifting performance and increase driver comfort. Wabco’s innovative new system is meant to support an extensive range of different truck types, gearboxes and market specific functionalities, which will support global AMT technology to further increase penetration in all regions.
In the field of AMT control solutions, Wabco is undoubtedly the market leader with over four million systems sold. Such solutions eliminate the repetition and exertion of manual gear changing operations with optimal automation of gear-shifting. Wabco says its AMT systems increase vehicle safety and comfort for commercial vehicle drivers. There is less distraction when driving as there is no need to manually change the gears and drivers can fully focus their attention on the road. It also removes any performance and efficiency gaps between skilled and less experienced drivers.
Nick Rens, Wabco President, EMEA said that the company was deeply honored to receive the contract for use of the company’s next generation AMT controls in Daimler’s vehicles. He said that Daimler’s order attested to the company’s confidence in Wabco’s technological leadership and drive to continually innovate.
Rens added “Confirming our global market leadership, this latest agreement with Daimler will help powerfully drive Wabco’s sustained outperformance as market penetration of our AMT controls increases and as we raise the technology bar further in support of our OEM and fleet customers globally.”
Wabco was the first company in the market to sell automated manual control technology for commercial vehicles in 1986 and is the market leader for AMT systems. The company’s engineers and global supply chain are located close to the leading manufacturers of vehicles and transmissions across the globe and hence Wabco is able to provide high levels of system integration and localization. OEMs get added value when they use Wabco’s AMT technology thanks to lower component weight, more compact design and simplified assembly processes, with the outcome being lower installation and manufacturing costs.
