Garmin has just debuted a new smart device that can be used for integration of Alexa services in a vehicle. Called Garmin Speak, the device integrates Alexa services through the vehicle stereo, thus making it possible to listen to music, audiobooks, news and weather using a full-fledged sound system instead of just a tiny speaker. Earlier, it was possible to use Alexa by mounting your smartphone and using the Alexa app, but this is the first such device that has been designed exclusively for use in vehicles.
On the front, the Speak has a circular OLED display depicting lane guidance arrows and the distance till the next turn. This is surrounded by a blue LED light like the one on Amazon’s Echo devices. It is also possible to use voice commands in order to get Garmin’s turn-by-turn navigation. “Our vision is that the Alexa service will be everywhere our customers want it, including inside the auto”. Consumers can use Alexa on the Garmin Speak to control devices in their Smart home while on the move, listening to news or traffic updates, add items to their shopping list and even to order dinner.
The device works in tandem with the free Garmin Speak app and as it syncs with the phone running the app, it uses the phone’s data connection and abilities.
