Faurecia, the leading French automotive technology provider ha steamed up with Japan Display Inc. (JDI), a market leader in automotive displays to further enhance the digital user experience in vehicles. The two companies will collaborate on the development and integration of large displays into automotive interiors. They will utilize their combined expertise and know-how so that the design and functionalities of large displays will become a key feature of cockpit attractiveness.
The two companies had first showcased their capabilities during CES 2019, by using the event to make the world premiere of a 32.1inches 6K display which was integrated into an instrument panel. The instrument panel displayed at the show had the capability to easily adapt its shape and the display moves based on the driving or autonomous mode by using advanced mechatronics, kinematics, materials and design to offer users an optimized viewing experience. During the driving mode, the display serves as a driving cluster that gives information and safety signals and is also a central screen for navigation and media. When the vehicle is in autonomous mode, the display changes into a large format entertainment screen. When the vehicle has front seats that can swivel inwards, the technology can be used to create a new shared ‘onboard cinema’ experience that the entire family can share.
Commenting on the technology, David Weill, vice-president marketing and business development at Faurecia Interiors, said that the new trends in the automotive industry like connected vehicles, autonomous driving, ride sharing and electrification are expected to totally transform the driving experience and thus vehicle interiors. Suppliers will increasingly depend on using versatility and personalization of displays to facilitate different onboard activities. By combining their expertise, JDI and Faurecia will be able to come up with innovative displays which are adapted to different use cases to enhance the user experience. Faurecia will leverage its expertise to ensure safety, high-perceived quality and seamless integration of displays into the cockpit.
Oliver Burscher, managing director of JDI Europe, said that from the perspective of a display manufacturer, the company foresaw a very interesting and technology-driven future for the complete automotive market. He felt that the shift towards autonomous driving and smart surfaces called for a complete re-thinking of the possibilities and needs of all passengers in the vehicle.
The JDI-team worked with technology experts from Faurecia to develop an outstanding display, which can cater to every kind of new well-being scenarios passengers will live, feel, see and enjoy in future vehicles.
