Corning showcased the latest concepts in automotive glass technology at the recent CES Show that was held in Las Vegas. The demonstrated what it called “The Glass Age” with a glass-enabled concept car. The car served to highlight how the company’s proprietary Gorilla Glass can be used for new applications in automotive glass and other products. A statement issued by the company said Corning is redefining the automotive experience through its products like the Gorilla Glass which is thin, tough, and optically advantaged. Speaking about the company’s participation in the show, Dr. Jeffrey Evenson, senior vice president and chief strategy officer said that through the show, the company had an opportunity to share its evolving Glass Age vision. The show served as a platform for consumers, customers and partners to engage with Corning and help it build the ecosystems for innovative solutions using precision glass that can redefine everyday activities. He expressed his belief that glass components can be as vital to the next 50 years as silicon components have been to the last 50 years.
Another company that showcased innovations in automotive glass with its next-generation Asola Spheric OEM solar glass auto roofs was Tellus Power. These solar glass auto roofs comprise spherically curved solar glass panels which are custom designed for auto manufacturers for direct integration into a car roof. They can also be used as solar glass sunroof. The different variants of the roof include a panoramic sunroof, openable sunroof, or electric tilt and slide sunroof.
According to Tellus Power, Asola solar auto glass features auto-grade, dual-laminated tempered safety glass that is robust enough to stand on, and yet is flexible enough to conform to the car roof shape. The energy generated by the solar roofs can be used to charge the batteries of electric vehicles batteries and to provide power to the HVAC blower while the vehicle is parked. This will reduce interior heat build-up by 50 percent without draining the vehicle’s battery.
Tellus-Asola is also launching custom auto manufacturer-branded solar glass car roof kits. These kits include a solar glass panel inserted into a slim carrier. This carrier can be glued directly onto a car roof and eliminates the need to drill unnecessary holes. These products are built in Erfurt, Germany.
