The Hyundai Motor Group has developed a smart cruise-control (SCC) system that can significantly contribute to safety on the road with its machine-learning technology. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to know more about the drivers’ habits. It then incorporates this learning into the company’s advanced driver assistance system.
While a conventional cruise control system maintains a fixed distance from the vehicle in front or ensures the vehicle travels at a constant speed on a highway, the new system receives data received from its radar, onboard cameras and the driver’s inputs, and collates this data to send to the vehicle’s onboard computer. The software then uses artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) to identify if there are any patterns in acceleration, responsiveness and distance for all driving conditions.
Once the computer has collected adequate data, it has the capability to differentiate between 10,000 patterns, so it can take over control of the vehicle and steer it autonomously in a manner that is isimilar to the driver’s. The system can even avoid learning dangerous habits, like not leaving enough distance from the vehicle in front, or driving too aggressively based on the conditions.
On the five-point scale of autonomous driving, the SCC-ML system helps Hyundai’s test vehicles achieve Level 2.5.
Commenting on the new system, Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group said, “The new SCC-ML improves on the intelligence of previous ADAS technologies to advance the practicality of semi-autonomous features. We’re continuing our development efforts on innovative AI technologies so that we lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving.”
