Goodyear succeeded in making an impact the Geneva Motor Show with two futuristic tire concepts that transformed the concept of the tire as a round and black” entity into a “spherical and black” object while incorporating plenty of sensors and “biomimicry”. The company unveiled two pathbreaking concept tires at the 86th edition of the Geneva Motor Show which can possibly be used in self-driving cars. The first tire, named the IntelliGrip tire comes with advanced sensors and treadwear technology. The Eagle-360 tire has an innovative spherical design and is connected to the vehicle by means of magnetic levitation.
The IntelliGrip uses advanced tread design and an advanced set of sensors which are linked to the autonomous driving system to improve the driving experience and road safety by giving motorists vital information about the weather and road surface. The concept tire not only takes these factors into account but also uses algorithms developed by Goodyear to assess the condition of the tire by checking parameters like tire temperature and inflation pressure. The tire would help a self-driving vehicle to automatically adjust its speed and slow down when it senses that the road is rainy or has a slippery surface. The main benefits that the tire offers would be a higher level of stability, shorter stopping distance, better cornering response and better support for collision prevention systems.
Goodyear has revealed that it is already working in collaboration with several leading vehicle manufacturers on using aspects of this tire technology in their vehicles in order to optimize the functioning of the suspension, brakes and features like electronic stability.
