Nokian Tyres has developed its very own Intuitu solution that gives motorists peace of mind with an app that they can use to check on the health of their tires. The mobile phone app makes it possible to use their phone to check the pressure or temperature of their tires so that they are free to focus on other, more important things. Keeping tires at their optimal pressure will go a long way to minimize damage to the soil, and reducing rolling resistance is directly related to the amount of fuel used.
As part of the Intuitu solution, the tires are equipped with sensors, while the motorists have access to a a mobile application and cloud-based data storage. Data is transmitted wirelessly through the IoT sensors. The vehicle does not need any kind of modification.
Nokian Tyres will be first providing the Intuitu solution for agricultural and contracting tires, but the company does have plans to extend the solution to its complete tire. The digitalized tires will be highly practical to use and owners will have access to real-time information to the owner.
Commenting on the technology used, Toni Silfverberg, Head of Sales & Marketing at Nokian Tyres said that the company has made an attempt to make the system plug & play. All customers have to do is buy the tires and install the app to get real-time updates on the tire pressure and temperature. They will be able to prevent tire damage and get early warning about any possible issues. By keeping the tires in good condition, they would be able to reduce machine downtime and any other damage related costs.
When it comes to fleet managers, having real-time access to such data can make a significant difference as it can help them to cut costs and improve production, while also become more alert about requirements for preventive maintenance. Nokian Tyres has made use of the technology more attractive to customers by offering those who opt for Intuitu an extra year of warranty.
“Many people still see tires as ‘just’ tires – a piece of rubber between your machine and the ground”, Silfverberg concluded. “With Nokian Tyres Intuitu, your tires are no longer forgotten pieces of rubber, but smart, active components they rightfully should be.”
