Continental AG has announced that it has finalized a five-year supply agreement with Pyrolyx AG for recovered Carbon Black (rCB). Pyrolyx is a market leader when it comes to the extraction of rCB from end-of-life tires. The rCB that is thus obtained is used for the manufacture of new tires and is also used in the plastic, technical, rubber and masterbatch industries.
Continental sees this as a major advance in addressing the global challenge of improving the sustainability of tire manufacturing and materials consumption.
As part of this agreement, Pyrolyx plans to source more than 3 million end-of-life tires from Continental and to reduce CO2 emissions by over 25,000 tons on an annual basis, compared to traditional carbon black. Comemnting on the collaboration with Pyrolyx, Continental’s Vice President of Material and Process Development and Industrialisation Andreas Topp said that the company was excited about entering into a long-term partnership between the two companies as it highlights Continental’s commitment to improving the sustainability of its products and operations.
“We are committed to innovative, environmentally beneficial technologies for our customers while ensuring our tyres meet the highest levels of safety performance,” Andreas added.
Pyrolyx’s U.S. CEO Thomas Redd said that the supply partnership with Continental is a highly positive development for the company.
Redd said, “This supply agreement is an extremely positive development for Pyrolyx and validates our approach to the recovery of carbon black from end-of-life tyres and the acceptance of rCB globally. The validation of Pyrolyx’s rCB is a ‘game-changer’ for Pyrolyx and the recovered carbon black industry.
Pyrolyx says the agreement will support the company’s growth with additional manufacturing facilities which will be located in North America and Eastern Europe.
