Volkswagen has recently signed a USD 180 million deal with Mobvoi in a bid to make smarter in-car voice assistants. The current range of products that are available have limited features and the German auto manufacturers is planning to use Mobvoi’s expertise in voice recognition and search technology to come up with products that can make the driving experience smoother.
Generally people turn more to their smartphone than to in-car systems for navigation and entertainment options while driving. Mobvoi, which specializes in smartwatches, has greater technical expertise when it comes to the use of AI and Volkswagen is hoping to leverage this in order to develop and sell better products The partnership will focus on refining current products and developing new products in the future.
One of the first products the two companies have worked on together is Mobvoi’s smart rearview mirror. The mirror will make it possible for motorists to enjoy music, video and get directions only through voice commands. You can even send instant messages through the mirror.
The partnership will initially be limited to the Chinese automotive market, but there are chances that it could be extended to cover other markets across the globe and even possibly, other brands.
Through investment in technological partnerships like these, Volkswagen is securing its own long-term future and trying to reach a more broad-based audience.
