Volvo models are known for their high safety standards and the company’s new XC 90 will have the most comprehensive and technologically-sophisticated standard safety package in the automotive industry with Delphi’s integrated radar and camera system.
Volvo had debuted the new XC90 at the Mondial de l’Automobile show which was held in Paris from October 4 to 19). The new XC90 is the first model in the world to offer users automatic braking at intersections.
The model incorporates Delphi’s industry-first and award-winning integrated Radar and Camera Sensor Fusion System (RaCAM). RaCAM is essentially a single unit that comprises radar sensing, vision sensing and data fusion components. The system serves as the basic technology used for a whole host of safety and driver assist functions like adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous braking for pedestrians, vehicles, animals and general objects. The XC90 also comes with Delphi’s second-generation 76GHz short range radar. This technology is used as the basis for features like lane change merge, blind spot detection and cross traffic alert.
Thus, Delphi has helped take active safety to the next level in Volvo’s XC90. Commenting on the achievement, Glen De Vos, vice president, Advanced Engineering for Delphi said, “Arguably, it doesn’t get any safer than the Volvo XC90. Why is Delphi heralding the safety merits of the Volvo when we don’t make the cars? Well, we make the safety systems that make this car the safest on the road. And we’re pretty proud of that.
