Osram, the renowned lighting manufacturer, set a new benchmark over 25 years ago with its Topled range, the first surfacemountable LEDs. Now as part of the Topled range, the company has launched Topled E1608 range of low-power LEDs which are not only a lot smaller but are also highly versatile to cater to the wide range of requirements that customers can come up with. Topled E1608 is smaller than its predecessor by factor 20. In spite of this reduction in size, the low-power LED is bright, reliable and strong. Automotive designers now better design flexibility and greater options, especially when it comes to designing vehicle interiors.
The new Topled E1608 LEDs use ThinGaN, thin film and Sapphire the latest chip technologies. These low-power LEDs work in tandem with the latest high-efficiency converters for producing light that is really spectacular in view of their size. At a normal operating current of 20 mA the new Topleds are 3.6 times brighter than their previous versions. The pure green conversion version manages to attain the impressive and unprecedented value of 780 mcd at 10 mA and is three times brighter than the classic Topled at the same current. When it comes to the packaging, Osram uses tried and tested premold technology, but it is smaller in size compared to the previous version. The name E1608 is derived from the product’s dimensions of 1.6 mm x 0.8 mm. The standard Topled measures 3.2 mm x 2.8 mm. The height of the E1608 at 0.6 mm is also significantly less than its predecessor’s 1.9 mm.
Topled E1608 – the industry standard of the future As the outcome of its new package dimensions, the new E1608 can be used for more compact customer systems.
Commenting on the new product, Anita Wenzl, Manager LED Automotive Interior at Osram Opto Semiconductors said that the new Topled E1608 LEDs are some of the smallest LEDs in their class. They also offer customers the benefits of reliability, a wide selection of colors and impressive values. They can be used irrespective of whether the application is toward to top or bottom of the brightness range. Osram expects the Topled E1608 range to become firmly established and possibly even set a new industry standard over the long term. Wenzl added that they are particularly suitable in the automotive sector for applications like displays, ambient lighting and backlighting of switches and instruments.
The new Topled generation will be available in many colors ranging from yellow and orange to super red, white, pure green and true green. The current market launch of six Topled E1608 products is the start of a whole series of new versions in this product family. In the course of 2017 more new versions will be successively launched.
