The wheel industry, like all other segments of the automotive industry is witness the advent of several innovative technologies like the use of carbon fiber and 3D printing technology. Forgeline has just launched a new set of wheels it has co-developed with Dymag which feature carbon fiber tubs and aluminum centers.
Carbon fiber has become increasingly popular when it comes to manufacture of wheels due to its properties like low weight, its intrinsic strength, and moldable nature. Many leading vehicle manufacturers like Porsche, Ford and Koenigsegg are using carbon fiber wheels as factory fitment for their high-performance models. Many companies like Carbon Revolution, which supplied carbon fiber wheels for the Ford GT and the Ford GT350 also make aftermarket wheels which motorists could purchase whenever they choose to.
One disadvantage is that wheels that are made entirely from carbon fiber ae prohibitively expensive in view of the time that is needed for their manufacture and the technology needed. Hence companies like Dymag offer options that involve the use of carbon fiber along with other lightweight materials like aluminum. That is what Forgeline has done to produce its new range.
Forgeline had launched the Carbon+Forged Series at the 2016 edition of the SEMA show and went on to launch improved variants later on. Currently, the range comprises four different wheel sizes: 20×9, 20×11, 20×12, and 21×12.5. The wheels comprise carbon fiber barrels that have been developed by Dymag and CNC-machined forged 6061-T6 aluminum wheels from Forgeline. The two pieces are bolted together to create a single unique unit, with the rim that is fashioned from carbon fiber being about 40 percent lighter than its aluminum counterpart. The aluminum component can also have a wide range of finishes in different colors and looks, making these wheels look better than those that are made entirely from carbon fiber.
The base price for each 20×9.0 wheel is USD 3,900, while it is USD 3925 for a 20×12.0 wheel and USD 4350 for a 21×12.5 wheel. All the sizes are currently available.
