A Chinese luxury sedan built to take on Rolls-Royce is about to be shown to the world for the first time, and it is happening in Dubai. BYD’s ultra-luxury brand Yangwang will unveil its new flagship, the Altior, in the UAE this week, before it appears anywhere in China. Here is everything confirmed so far, and everything still under wraps.
Quick Highlights
- World debut in the UAE, reportedly on November 5
- Positioned against the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Mercedes-Maybach
- Reportedly around 5.5 metres long
- Sold as “Altior” internationally and “Dingyao” in China
- Powertrain, battery and official pricing have not been announced
What Is the Yangwang Altior?
The Altior is Yangwang’s new executive flagship sedan, previously known only by the codename “HU”. Yangwang confirmed the name on October 27 with a first teaser. The name comes from the Latin word for “higher”, and it marks a deliberate break from the letter-and-number names of the U7, U8 and U9. It sits above those models in the Yangwang range.
Why Is It Debuting in Dubai?
Choosing the UAE for a world debut, before China, shows how important the region is to BYD’s luxury plans. Yangwang is already sold here through local distributor Al-Futtaim, and the Yangwang U8 recently joined the Dubai Police luxury patrol fleet. The debut is reported for around November 5, but the exact date and venue had not been officially announced at the time of writing.
What We Know So Far
- Positioning: reported rival to the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Mercedes-Maybach S-Class
- Size: reportedly about 5.5 metres long
- Design: it carries the design language first seen on the U8 off-roader, and the first photo without camouflage appeared on October 30
- Price: Chinese media estimate roughly AED 1.1 million (US$300,000), but this is not official. The UAE price is expected to be announced at launch.
What Is Still Unconfirmed
BYD has not announced the powertrain, battery chemistry or total power. Some reports expect four electric motors and hydraulic suspension, and there are rumours about solid-state battery technology. Treat all of these as unconfirmed until the reveal. UAE pricing is also expected to be announced at launch, because Chinese prices do not translate directly to the UAE.
Yangwang Is Not New to the UAE
Yangwang’s presence here is growing. The U8, known for its four electric motors and its ability to float in water, is already on sale, and its addition to the Dubai Police luxury patrol fleet gave the brand extra visibility. The Altior will be the most ambitious car the brand has shown to date.
Another Record Attempt Could Follow
The Altior is not the only Yangwang headline this month. The Yangwang U9 Xtreme, an electric hypercar with about 2,977hp, reached 496.22 km/h in Germany in September 2025. BYD executive vice president Stella Li has said the car will try again to pass 500 km/h in November, just 3.78 km/h above its current best. She has named Dubai as the intended location, but BYD has not publicly confirmed the venue, date or permissions, so do not treat it as scheduled yet.
Final Thoughts
Whether the Altior can really challenge the names that have owned the luxury sedan class for decades is the big question. We will know much more after the reveal, and we will update this article with specifications and UAE pricing once they are official. Would you choose a Yangwang over a Rolls-Royce?
