Adding yet another feather to its cap, the formidable Ford F-150 pickup truck has picked up an award for “Green Truck of the Year”. It received this accolade from the Green Car Journal at the San Antonio Auto & Truck Show.
The 2016 Ford F-150 which has been billed as the toughest, smartest, most rugged version yet of the model has the highest EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating in the full-size petrol pickup category, at 26 mpg. Ford also offers an exclusive version of the model that is powered by compressed natural gas/propane gaseous fuel prep package, thus further reducing its operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions.
Commenting on the award Ron Cogan, editor and publisher, Green Car Journal and CarsOfChange.com. said the 2016 Ford F-150 is a wonderful example of environmental leadership, especially in view of the high popularity of pickups in the US market. Its most notable features are milestone reduction in weight through the use of aluminum and high-strength steel in addition to the use of a powerful and efficient 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine plus of course, the availability of the clean-burning compressed natural gas or propane option. This makes the F-150 the segment leader when it comes to environmental performance.
Ford took immense care to use sustainable materials in the design of the F-150 to help reduce its environmental footprint. The truck’s cloth seats were fashioned from REPREVE fiber, which is made from recycled plastic bottles. With this step alone, Ford will be perting over 5 million plastic bottles from landfills this year.
Other eco-friendly materials that were used as components of the truck include the use of rice hulls to reinforce the plastic used in an electrical harness, use of castor bean oil to make fuel lines, and use of recycled cotton and soybeans in the seats.
“We designed Ford F-150 to be a game changer,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Many have recognized F-150 as the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 ever, but this award is proof it’s also a fuel-efficient, environmentally responsible option.”
