Ford has announced that its all-new 2018 Expedition has earned a five-star rating during the tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States as part of its New Car Assessment Program. This is the highest possible score a vehicle can get and makes the new Expedition the safest full-size SUV. The Expedition is the only vehicle in this segment to get an Overall Vehicle Score of five stars.
The main attributes that helped the Expedition to get this rating was its robust build thanks to its all-new fully boxed steel frame and high-strength, military-grade, aluminium-alloy body. The use of aluminium helped Ford to decrease weight by about 325 pounds. The use of high-strength, military-grade, aluminium alloy in the body lowered the vehicle’s centre of gravity, giving it better stability and contributing to the driving dynamics. All these factors further ramp up the performance of the vehicle.
Another factor that contributes to the safety aspect is the availability of dual seat belt pyrotechnic pretensioners in the anchor and retractor, which help to keep occupants in place in the event of an accident. Commenting on the new Expedition, Andrew Kernahan, Ford Expedition chief program engineer said that as a father of four and longtime Expedition owner, his top priority was when engineering the new Expedition.
In addition to the improvements to the body and the frame, the all-new Expedition offers several new technologies that enhance safety. These include Cross-Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, auto high beams and enhanced active park assist promote for higher levels of driver confidence and control.
Other highly attractive attributes of the All-New Ford Expedition include best-in-class fuel economy, best-in-class torque, best-in-class space for the second and third rows, best-in-class towing and the largest panoramic sunroof in its category.
