The ever-increasing need for monitoring the safety of children has led to the development of apps and smart devices that help parents and children to manage their personal safety. The Smart Government program at the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Interior introduces the Hemayati Bracelet, an app-enabled wearable smart device that acts as a physical safety monitor, with a host of features including geospatial tracking through an associated smartphone app, heartbeat detection and proximity monitoring.
The bracelet is the brainchild of Lt. Colonel Faisal Mohammed Al Shimmari, Executive Director at the Ministry of Interior, who envisions that the bracelet’s use extends to special needs inpiduals and for use in all public areas. The bracelet also features a failsafe mechanism that triggers an alarm when an attempt is made to forcibly remove the device from a child’s arm. The Hemayati Bracelet has been designed as a device that replaces the cellular phone due to the prevention of their use in schools and other educational institutions. Using the bracelet, children can trigger an alarm when in danger and notify the parents through the Hemayati smartphone app. Media releases by the company seem to indicate that two-way communication capabilities may be integrated into the device.
Registration for the service is managed through the UAE’s telecommunications service provider Etisalat where parents may obtain their unique ID cards and download the Hemayati app after verifying the base cell phone number that will be used as the primary contact number by the bracelet. The bracelet is designed to give parents the comfort of knowing their child’s location at any time of the day and is targeted at a wide age range of 4 to 16 years.
