In 2019, Bugatti will be celebrating its 110th anniversary, making it the oldest supercar brand in existence. This year also marks one year since Stephan Winkelmann took over as the President of the Bugatti. Bugatti has been in the business of making high-performance cars in Molsheim, Alsace, from 1909, with its first model being the Type 10, which was sold at the retail level as the Bugatti Type 13 after further refinements were asses. From the Type 10 to the current Chiron and Divo models, Bugatti has constantly endeavored to make the most powerful, and automobiles in the world. These vehicles are the epitome of excellence and are handcrafted over a period of several weeks.
Commenting on the company’s vehicles, Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., said that attaining the top speed is not all that is important for Bugatti, though its models are some of the fastest cars in their class. Bugatti models not only offers motorists the highest levels of performance, but they also offer very high levels of luxury and comfort.
Bugatti has made the Chiron, which is largely handcrafted, from 2016. Last year, it made as many as 76 Individual luxury hyper sports cars, and each of them was unique. Currently, Bugatti has limited the production of the total Chiron series to 500 units in the period up to the end of 2021. According to Winkelmann, the Chiron is a super sports car that is a street-legal racing car like the T 35 while offering motorists the comfort and luxury of a Type 41 Royale and the stylish design of the Type 57 SC Atlantic. Bugatti models sport unique designs with the Chiron sporting Bugatti’s famous line, a sculpted letter “C” which runs from the B-pillar to the back. In 2018, Bugatti launched the Chiron Sport and the Divo. The Divo, like the Chiron is powered by Bugatti’s 1,500 PS eight-litre W16 engine. It is more agile than the Chiron and performs better on winding roads without any compromise when it comes to comfort and luxury. To develop the Divo, Bugatti’s engineers tinkered further with the Chiron’s aerodynamic properties, chassis settings and its weight. The outcome is that the Divo generates 90 kilograms more downforce and is 35 kilograms lighter than the Chiron, while its lateral acceleration is 1.6 g.
With the Divo, Bugatti reinforced its long tradition of coachbuilding, which involves using an existing chassis in tandem with bodies that are designed in-house. The series of 40 Divo cars easily sold out despite the high price of 5 million euros. From 2019 onwards, the Bugatti Divo will be produced together with the Chiron at the company’s factory in Molsheim, Alsace and customers will receive the first vehicles in 2020. Winkelmann termed both the Chiron and the Divo as highly individual masterpieces of automobile craftsmanship that are unparalleled.
We can expect more from Bugatti in 2019 as the brand continues to strive for perfection and artistic technology in the tradition of its founder, Ettore Bugatti. Bugatti was born in Milan in 1881, and made his first vehicle, a motorized tricycle, when he was just a minor. He used this vehicle for racing and went on to work as a designer and inventor for a many different coachbuilders before designing a car himself in 1909, the Type 10. The Type 10 was significantly different from the heavy, sluggish vehicles of the time. Shortly thereafter, Ettore Bugatti set up his very own company called “Automobiles Ettore Bugatti”. During his later years, he created masterpieces of design like the Type 35. His son Jean Bugatti, was also extremely talented in the field of automotive design and designed the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, which is now recognized as one of the most valuable cars in the world. Bugatti is definitely doing justice to this glorious heritage with its focus on the development and production of the Chiron, Divo and other new variants which will be designed to set new benchmarks in terms of luxury, performance and design – with high aesthetic and artistic standards.
“Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. is a French luxury brand that has its roots not only in car making but also in art,” said Stephan Winkelmann. In line with Ettore Bugatti’s ethos, every detail of a vehicle must be aesthetically designed. Bugatti as a brand is known for combining an artistic approach with superior technical innovations derived from the world of sport. Customers experience the benefits of this meticulous approach when it comes to the complex workmanship, the high performance and the luxurious interiors f Bugatti vehicles.
In 2019, Bugatti will mark its 110th anniversary, which makes the company the oldest super sports car brand still in existence. Bugatti will be commemorating this anniversary with events like a grand tour of places where Ettore Bugatti was active and the launch of new models, though Stephan Winkelmann draws the line at an SUV from Bugatti as he feels that it would not do justice to the brand or its history.
