Hyundai Ioniq sedan and Kia Niro crossover SUVs are two lucky vehicles as BorgWarner will soon be supplying them with its highly advanced exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. These hybrid and gasoline vehicles are powered by the 1.6-liter gasoline direct-injected (GDI) Kappa engine, which is anticipated to drive a growing line-up of hybrid models from the automotive manufacturers.
BorgWarner’s compact and optimized EGR valve contributes to the vehicle’s lower emissions and three percent increase in fuel economy.
According to Brady Ericson, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Emissions Systems, their years of diesel and gasoline EGR experience along with their deep engine system know-how drove the to develop a new EGR valve designed particularly for the distinctive requirements of today’s advanced gas engines.
He explains that BorgWarner’s new long-pressure EGR technology provides automakers with a compact, reliable and cost-effective method for enhancing fuel economy and reducing emissions, and is quickly becoming the standard solution for gasoline hybrid propulsion systems. “We are pleased to contribute our EGR technology to a growing list of Hyundai and Kia vehicles.”
BorgWarner’s EGR valve for gasoline hybrid propulsion systems enhance fuel economy and reduce emissions for the new hybrid Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Niro.
Accurately regulating EGR throughout an array of rpms and loads reduces high temperatures in the combustion chamber, enabling different strategies targeted at enhancing engine efficiency and fuel economy. For instance, utilizing cooled EGR manages pumping losses to help the engine run more efficiently, enhances combustion timing for a leaner burn without knocking and helps prevent the use of enriched air/fuel mixtures, which saves fuel. The technology also cuts down carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions as well as particulate matter.
Unlike other models, BorgWarner’s EGR valve delivers outstanding accuracy by measuring valve lift directly. The streamlined, low-leak design also resists sticking and utilizes fewer parts in the gear train, leading to a compact, cost-effective solution with 25 percent faster response compared with previous models.
