Tire manufacturer Yokohama Tire Corporation had signed a multimillion deal to become the official shirt partner, Arsenal FC back in 2015. As part of the deal, all of the team’s jerseys sport the Yokohama logo. Yokohama had used this partnership to reach out to Chelsea fans across the United States by holding a fan contest. Daniel E. of Phoeinix, Arizona won the contest and got a chance to see his heroes in action.
The Chelsea FC, which is fondly known as “the Blues” was set up in 1905 and is one of the most well known teams in the English Premier league, with millions of fans across the world. The club has won as many as five league titles, seven FA Cups, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, the UEFA Champions League in 2012 and the UEFA Europa League in 2013. It is the only club from the United Kingdom which has won all the three main UEFA club tournaments.
As part of the True Blue Challenge, the Yokohama contest invited the fans of the club across the United States to submit videos detailing why they should be chosen as the club’s “ultimate fan”. Daniel E. won this contest by submitting a short video that was chosen as the winner from hundreds of submissions. According to Alan Holtschneider, Yokohama’s director of marketing, Daniel’s enthusiasm really marked him out.
As the winner of the grand prize, Daniel got an all-expenses-paid trip to Pasadena, California to watch Chelsea take on Liverpool FC at the Rose Bowl on July 27. He also won a 2016-2017 Chelsea FC jersey that was signed by the members of the first team and USD 1000 as spending money. Two participants who qualified for the second prize received a Chelsea FC jersey and a set of Yokohama tires and a Chelsea FC jersey. Ten third-place winners won a Chelsea FC jersey.
“It was great to see so many fans enter and show us how passionate they are about the team,”. Holtschneider added. “That’s what makes our partnership with Chelsea so rewarding.”
