Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Tires Selected as Sole OE for BMW M4 GTS

Specially customized versions of the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires have been chosen as the sole OE fitment for BMWw’s new limited special model BMW M4 GTS.

The BMW M4 GTS is a track car that has been approved for road use. Hence, Michelin’s engineers had to design and develop an ultra-high-performance tire that could easily tackle a wide range of road and track conditions in different parts of the world. Hence, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for this model were made using an asymmetric casing design as well as a Bi-Compound asymmetric tread pattern in order to offer the best combination of tire life, handling and grip. As part of the development process, Michelin made and tested over 1,000 prototype tires and 400 special series tires which were tested by both the BMW M test team and the Michelin test drivers.

In order to design a tire that could meet the stringent performance characteristics set by BMW M, Michelin’s engineers carefully studied the interaction between the ire’s tread compounds, architecture and profile, and between the tires on each axle. The final outcome of this process was a tire that not only was ideal for road use with its steering response, comfort and handling but also offered race drivers consistent performance on track and fast lap times, especially with a view to limiting heat build-up and wear.

In addition to Michelin’s Bi-Compound technology, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires also have a motorsport-developed Track Variable Contact Patch 3.0. This feature varies the pressure in the tire’s contact patch so that the same amount of rubber is always in contact with the road or track, whether the car is being driven in a straight line or cornering. Premium Touch Technology is used in the sidewalls o make the tires look good in addition to offering very high levels of performance. Thus, the tires are the perfect complement to the BMW M4 GTS both when it comes to performance and style.
