WABCO Holdings Inc., which is one of the leading suppliers of technologies to enhance efficiency, safety and connectivity in commercial automobiles has made significant impact in the Indian automotive market by signing a deal with Mahindra & Mahindra for the supply of vacuum pumps. Mahindra & Mahindra is one of India’s biggest manufacturers of SUVs and passenger cars. The agreement is a multi-year deal and WABCO will be required to supply pumps for all of Mahindra & Mahindra’s major engine platforms with the first such vehicle expected to come off the production line in 2017.
As part of the deal, WABCO will supply Mahindra & Mahindra with compact vacuum pumps that are notable for their minimal power consumption and their modular, lightweight design. These pumps will be used in both braking and non-braking functions and will facilitate better fuel economy and lower emissions. In order to a better class of service to Mahindra & Mahindra, WABCO will also be implementing its world-class manufacturing and product application standards on a local basis.
Commenting on the deal, Bhupesh Patil, Senior General Manager, Strategic Sourcing, Mahindra & Mahindra said that it is Mahindra’s aim to design and manufacture vehicles that are reliable, strong, economical and are environmentally responsible.
He added, “WABCO’s technology leadership in vacuum pumps is consistent with our commitment to innovation, enabling us to achieve automotive breakthroughs and helping us to build cars that thrill their owners.”
P. Kaniappan, Vice President, WABCO INDIA said that he appreciated Mahindra & Mahindra’s confidence in the new long-term supply relationship between the two parties, particularly in view of WABCO’s technology leadership which will be used to fortify Mahindra & Mahindra’s competitiveness. He also said that the agreement was finalized in view of WABCO’s commitment to differentiate its products through high quality and cost effectiveness. With India emerging as a key growth market for passenger cars, this deal brightens WABCO’s long-term prospects in this highly competitive market.
