Varroc Lighting Systems has developed Surface-LED lights, which it is billing as the latest innovation when it comes to exterior vehicle lighting systems. These reliable and cost-effective lights combine the appearance of OLEDs with the efficacy of LED light sources. This cost-effective and reliable product will give OEMS greater leeway when it comes to the design and functionality of exterior lighting. The company’s patented Surface-LED technology uses thin layers of micro-optic filters and conventional LED light sources make the lights look homogeneous just like OLEDs. Each element of the lighting system is only 3.5mm thick, and its luminous intensity can be scaled from 2,000–13,000 cd/m2. Automotive-quality OLEDs that are currently available in the market cannot be produced in curved and 3-D shapes whereas this is possible in the case of surface-LED elements. They are also available in multiple colors so that they can be used for various functions.
With Surface-LED lights, Varroc Lighting Systems is able to combine the benefits of the nascent OLED technology like its homogenous lighting profile and ultra-thin nature with the reliability, low cost and flexibility of LEDs. OEM designers now have more flexibility when it comes to designing a cost-effective and high-impact lighting style for new models.
Todd Morgan, senior vice president of product development at Varroc Lighting Systems said that while OEMS are eager to implement the appearance of OLED in exterior vehicle lights, the technical complications and cost have serves as barriers and the technology is used only in premium models. He added, “Surface-LED eliminates these hurdles, and even adds a few features that are not yet possible with OLEDs. Customer feedback on Surface-LED has been extremely positive and we can see many new applications already.”
Stephane Vedie, CEO of Varroc Lighting Systems, said that Varroc Lighting Systems, takes pride in its ability to provide its customers with leading-edge technology at a competitive cost. The company is currently celebrating the fifth anniversary of joining the Varroc Group, and Surface-LED serves to showcase how becoming part of the Varroc family has allowed the firm to become a more efficient and forward-looking organization, while retaining its traditions of innovation and quality excellence. Varroc Lighting Systems unveiled the Surface-LED lights during the company’s participation at the 2017 edition of the International Symposium on Automotive Lighting (ISAL) in Darmstadt, Germany, which is one of the leading events in the world related to automotive lighting.
