For the first time in its history, Lamborghini will be producing V8 twin-turbo engine for its upcoming Urus. This was confirmed by the company’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, who disclosed a number of details about the SUV.
Having driven the Urus with its new V8 twin-turbo engine, Winkelmann revealed in an interview that the car’s performance was great. “I was astonished – it was more than any of us expected, which is a car that is very powerful but easy to drive, with very good handling, and also in terms of drivability and comfort, it has a limousine feel in an SUV. This is very important to us.”
The 4.0 liter V8 twin-turbo engine to be equipped in the Urus will be exclusively unique to the Italian brand, notwithstanding the SUV being likely to share a common platform with the Bentley Bentayga and Audi Q7.
According to Research and development boss at Lamborghini, Maurizio Reggiani, in order to be the most powerful in the class, the car should have something dedicated to their brand. He noted that it should be able to crank out the right amount of power and torque, but it must be done in conjunction with the right transmission and chassis control that makes it a true Lamborghini. However, no particular performance details were disclosed.
The Urus is Lamborghini’s first 4X4 SUV model since the LM002, which the Italian automaker discontinued in 1993.
Commenting on the car’s design, the Lamborghini CEO said that the production version would be an advancement of the concept that was first unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. He revealed that his designers are almost done with the car’s exterior, claiming that it would be easily identifiable as a Lamborghini.
The Urus’ interior will also be updated from the concept. Winkelmann explained that in the interior, it would have a look and feel that is quite different from where they have been before. “The Urus must be capable of being a family’s first car all year round. It must have drivability, comfort, roominess and more.”
The much-anticipated Lamborghini Urus SUV powered by a new twin-turbo V8 engine is slated to be showcased at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, but the automaker said that if everything goes as planned, it could also be unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
