Renovo, a company that specializes in automated mobility operating systems has announced that it will be working with Samsung Electronics on the development of highly-automated vehicle technology. The two companies have been working together from the beginning of 2017 and as an outcome of this collaboration, the Samsung Strategy & Innovation Center (SSIC) Smart Machines Group will use Renovo’s AWare operating system in its first fleet of test vehicles in California.
Renovo’s Aware is the first OS that has been built specifically for automated mobility on demand (AMoD). It brings together on one platform several heterogeneous systems safely and securely, and will expedite the development of highly automated vehicles on a large scale. AWare is already being used in vehicles that are currently being tested on private and public roads today, and will continue to be used to support deployment of AMoD pilot vehicles in 2018.
Renovo’s ultimate goal is the development of systems which will make it possible for automated vehicles to take their passengers on affordable, safe, convenient and enjoyable urban journeys with just the touch of a button. Both Renovo and Samsung believe in attainment of this goal through open innovation and collaboration. Different car companies, fleets, electronics suppliers, networks, artificial intelligence providers, and other application centers must use platforms that are interoperable so that automated vehicles can move smoothly and safely.
Commenting on the collaboration, Chris Heiser, Co-Founder and CEO of Renovo said that the company was very happy to work with Samsun on the development of highly automated vehicles which are expected to reshape mobility in the future.
Just like Samsung revolutionized the concept of mobile phones, there will be major changes in the concept of mobility and hence Samsung was the obvious choice for Renovo to partner with as a technology collaborator and investor.
John Absmeier, Senior Vice President of HARMAN Autonomous/ADAS Strategic Business Unit and Vice President of Smart Machines for Samsung Strategy & Innovation Center said, “Renovo is working on the cutting edge of mobility — building a robust and scalable operating system for the next generation of automated vehicles which we are using in our test vehicles. Their vision aligns with our mission at Samsung, creating open technologies that foster collaboration, and lead to safer, smarter vehicles. Automation is transforming the mobility experience, and it requires that the automotive industry come together to create a truly safe, open, and interoperable ecosystem. Renovo’s expert team is working to make that happen.”
