It seems that the odds are in favor with Sierra Wireless. Just recently, its AirPrime® AR Series modules have been chosen by PATEO to enable cellular connectivity for the company’s telematics units being installed in vehicles for the China market. The automotive-grade AR Series embedded modules started shipping to PATEO in the first quarter of this year, and the first deployment of their telematics units is in Geely’s vehicle platforms.
In a statement, Chris Ying, VP of PATEO Connected Cars, said that Sierra Wireless gives them a leading-edge automotive connectivity solution that is easily scalable across 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies. He explained that the AR Series gives them a full automotive-grade module and an open-source embedded platform for application services, offering a complete solution to reinforce their vision to develop cutting-edge technology for connected cars in the future.
Headquartered in Shanghai, PATEO is a top provider of products and services for connected cars in China, specializing in infotainment and telematics systems. Through the years, it has captured a huge market share in self-owned, joint venture and luxury brand markets in the country. Geely is a premier Chinese automotive company with over 30 vehicle models, a solid dealer presence in China, and global sales and service in over 40 countries. Geely also owns Volvo Car Group, which it purchased in 2010.
Dan Schieler, SVP & GM of OEM Solutions for Sierra Wireless commented that the AR Series modules with the Legato™ embedded software application platform give a state-of-the-art automotive solution for next-gen vehicles. He added that they are delighted to collaborate with PATEO and look forward to working closely with them on their cellular connectivity requirements.
The Sierra Wireless AR Series embedded modules are integrated with Legato software, a Linux-based embedded platform designed to streamline application development and enables automotive OEMs to develop new connected car services. Apart from the flexible hardware design, the AirPrime AR Series firmware is also designed to be future-proof. Utilizing Sierra Wireless’ cloud-based platform, customers can easily upgrade device firmware over-the-air for thousands of even millions of deployed devices at a time.
