Many modern vehicles now have a wide range of electronic and computerized systems for controlling functions ranging from electric windows and central locking, to the air conditioning and anti-lock braking. Many of these systems work completely independently and are all controlled by different electronic control units. Some might communicate with each other, while others do not. This can limit the scope to upgrade any of the systems within a car.
Nvidia has now joined hands with Mercedes-Benz to transform the manner in which electronic systems work in cars. The two companies plan to develop a powerful new automotive AI platform which will serve as a central hub for coordinating all the electronic and computerized functions.
Nvidia has already developed the MBUX cockpit system for Mercedes-Benz and the two companies are now expanding their cooperation with this new project. Nvidia’s Drive AGX platform is essentially a high performance computer that has the capability to demonstrate complex AI functionality, and there is every possibility that it can play a key role in changing the next generation of Mercedes-Benz cars
Nvidia has already emerged as a leader in automotive AI, with its latest Drive AGX platform that underpins the basis of the autonomous driving play for many leading automakers.
The two companies are planning not just to centralize the control of all the car’s systems in an intelligent manner, but also to create whole new systems and features. These features could possibly even learn over time, who is driving the car, and depending on their preferences and habits, change the settings for greater comfort and safety.
