At this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, LG Electronics and Intel have announced their collaboration to develop and pilot 5G-based telematics technology, the next-gen wireless technology for cars. The two companies will leverage their leadership and expertise in research and development with the target to be the first to market with 5G ready solutions. LG is one of the first companies to supply telematics products that rely on LTE connectivity instead of older 2G- or 3G-based networks.
The beauty of 5G telematics is that it delivers data more than 33 times faster than 4G LTE with latency anticipated to drop to approximately one tenth of current speeds. Multimedia content including videos will be downloaded faster through the car’s infotainment systems and software can be updated at high speeds via over-the-air (OTA) networks.
Powered by Vehicle to Everything (V2X) technology, 5G’s significantly reduced latency is possible even when cars are travelling at high speeds. It helps prevent road mishaps whether through communication from vehicle to infrastructure (V2I), vehicle to vehicle (V2V) or vehicle to pedestrian (V2P).
By combining its solid Mobile Communications technology with the insight of its Vehicle Components pision, LG has made huge leaps to reinforce its telematics leadership in the smart car industry. LG is the official supplier of vehicle telematics for GM’s 4G LTE OnStar telematics system, which has enabled the company to take the top position in automotive telematics with a market share of 30.1 percent in 2013, 20.3 percent in 2014 and 29.9 percent last year, in accordance with Strategy Analytics.
In a statement, Kim Jin-yong, President of LG Electronics’ Vehicle Components In-Vehicle Infotainment Business Unit, said that by working closely with Intel, they hope to establish upon their leadership with LG’s next-gen 5G telematics products.
Meanwhile, Aicha Evans, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intel Communication and Devices Group, noted that LG is an essential vehicle component supplier for the joint research and development of 5G telematics. “We believe the combination of LG connectivity leadership and Intel expertise in connected cars, sensor fusion and distributed deep learning will deliver innovative 5G technology for the car.”
