The advent of autonomous driving will naturally transform the manner in which the interiors of cars are designed. Automated driving means drivers will be relaxed and there will be greater degree of flexibility in terms of seat design, display technologies and the layout of the interiors. The steering wheel is set to become an optional feature, one that needs to be used only when the driver wants to assume control of the car. This is why Jaguar Land Rover has created a removable steering wheel as part of the upcoming Future-Type concept. This steering wheel can be used by motorists in multiple vehicles as they move from one vehicle to another.
Jaguar Land Rover has not disclosed many details about the Sayer steering wheel but it has many advanced features including artificial intelligence software that could help consumers handle many tasks in their vehicles and even in their homes, and might even make it similar to a virtual personal assistant like Amazon Echo.
There is every possibility that when you store the details of a meeting in the software, the steering wheel could organize for the vehicle to turn up at your doorstep in time to take you to the meeting. It might even be intelligent enough to suggest when you should take control of the vehicle and when you should allow the vehicle to drive itself.
According to Jaguar Land Rover, the wheel could also be used as part of membership of an on-demand car sharing service, so that members of this service can share their vehicle with other members or use the wheel to access the cars belonging to the service.
The wheel has been named after Malcolm Sayer, who was a designer at Jaguar from 1951 and 1970. It will be showcased at the first Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest which will be held at the Central Saint Martins art, design and technology college in London. The event is scheduled to run from September 8 to September 10.
