Technology has scaled new highs when it comes to the automotive sector. There are numerous technological innovations that have become available in recent years to make life on the road safer, easier and more convenient. Two companies named Jabil and eyeSight Technologies have announced that they have become partners in order to develop what they claim will be the next-generation in-car sensing technology.
The aim of the two companies is to develop a combined hardware and software system that can operate with sub-optimal accuracy to achieve the most advanced levels of driver monitoring and gesture control. By teaming up, the two companies plan to work on making the system smaller so that the system can be used not only in high-end luxury cars, but also in cars belonging to every category.
Jabil and eyesight Technologies issued a release in which they said that the scalable system can be retrofitted in existing models by integrating it into cockpit electronics. It uses time-of-flight and infrared technology to assess driver distraction, driver attentiveness, for driver identification and gesture control.
Many suppliers are working on integrating advanced in-car sensing technology so that it can be used to detect distracted driving and reduce accident rate. The technology can also be used to support semi-autonomous features that are used to monitor whether a motorist is indeed paying attention when he is at the wheel.
“Jabil’s partnership with eyeSight Technologies supports automakers working to reduce accidents involving driver distraction,” said Lisa Bahash, senior vice president, Jabil Automotive Group. “The accuracy, intelligence and efficiency of the system we’re developing will enable automakers to implement in-car sensing systems across all vehicle types.”
