Just recently, FotoNation Limited has teamed up with Kyocera Corp. for the development of state-of-the-art, intelligent, vision solutions for automotive applications. As part of the collaboration and using FotoNation technology as a solid foundation, the two firms will jointly develop state-of-the-art computer vision solutions for the automotive market.
Stricter safety regulations and the promise of semi and fully autonomous vehicles are making huge technology demands from automotive manufacturers and automotive OEMs. By utilizing the solutions that are being jointly developed by FotoNation and Kyocera, automakers and automotive OEMs will not just be able to improve driver and pedestrian safety, but will also be able to speed up the implementation of semi and fully autonomous vehicles.
Kyocera is a renowned supplier of rear-view camera systems to the automotive industry. This experience gives the company a deep understanding of the automotive industry’s upcoming requirements for vision systems. Integrating higher levels of intelligence into Kyocera’s camera systems will enable the company to launch new, feature-rich products such as surround view cameras to market.
According to Norio Okuda, Manager, Kyocera, these technologies would provide a safer driving environment for occupants and pedestrians in urban areas, by enabling cars to see and interact with motorists. He said that FotoNation is focused on delivering complicated computational imaging solutions for automotive applications, and together they would develop technologies that would transform the future of driving.
A pioneer in the development of cutting-edge computational imaging algorithms, FotoNation offers best-in-class hardware accelerated imaging solutions for multiple automotive applications, including 360 degree occupancy monitoring, smart rearview cameras, e-mirror, surround view, driver identification, and driver monitoring systems (DMS).
Sumat Mehra, senior vice president of marketing and business development at FotoNation, said in a statement that the increasing interest from the automotive industry for vision systems to improve vehicle safety represents a chance for huge growth for FotoNation, driven mainly by implementation of their state-of-the-art imaging systems by tier-one automotive OEMs and suppliers. “Kyocera has a strong reputation as a leading technology innovator, and we are pleased to be working with them as a valued technology partner to bring these cutting-edge vision solutions to market.”
