Continental has expanded its range of products for the automotive aftermarket by adding turbochargers as original part. From December onwards, Continental has been offering two turbochargers for Ford engines under the Continental brand. The company is planning to make turbochargers for other vehicle manufacturers as well.
Michael Rieth, product manager at Continental explained that turbochargers have become increasingly important components with emissions requirements becoming more stringent across the globe and automotive companies keen on downsizing. More OEMs are now equipping diesel and petrol engines with turbochargers to enhance their efficiency. Turbochargers also have a key role when it comes to hybrid vehicles, which are now more commonly used. This is the first product for which Continental is offering dealers and repair shops in the independent aftermarket the original as a replacement part for repairs. The turbocharger will be available in the market through specialized turbocharger distributors.
Two turbos for Ford EcoBoost engines
From 2011, Continental has been supplying the turbocharger for Ford’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, and this engine has received the accolade of “Engine of the Year” several times. The turbocharger is installed in many high-volume Ford models, including the C-Max, Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo. The turbocharger will now be available in the aftermarket in two variants: one for 100-hp EcoBoost engines and one for EcoBoost engines exceeding 100 hp. There will also be matching valve sets for both turbochargers.
Rieth said that Continental is already working on expanding its product range with other accessories.
