In its target to become a trendy “quirk brand”, Buick never stops gathering all the tools it needs. The newest piece in the GM automobile pision’s puzzle is a twin-clutch all-wheel drive (AWD) system that is aimed at shedding Buick’s outmoded, disengaging image.
In a statement, Buick LaCrosse Marketing Manager, Doug Osterhoff, said that the system would provide real benefits for drivers who are not only exposed to snowy conditions, but the benefits also translate to dry pavement. He added that this has a real performance element to it, with huge benefits on cornering and acceleration. “We think this will have more play.”
The all-new twin-clutch system enables for power to be sent between the front and rear wheels as well as between both rear wheels, replacing the standard differential and single clutch system. Developed by BKN, this system can send 100-percent of torque to the front, back and in-between based on driving conditions. It will also eventually offer fuel economy benefits as seen in the 2017 Cadillac XT5 which utilizes the same system. When in “Tour” mode, the AWD can be disconnected to deliver more economical fuel consumption.
Buick still has to see if customers will take to the idea of AWD boosting performance in its vehicles, but everything can successfully be delivered with a proper and catchy message.
The twin-clutch all-wheel drive system will be unveiled in the 2017 Buick LaCrosse.
