AGC Asahi Glass (AGC), has begun mass production of 3D curved cover glass for car-mounted displays for the first time. Asahi Glass is one of the leading players in the manufacture of glass, chemicals and high-tech materials. The company will be making 3D curved cover glass for car-mounted displays on a commercial basis at its Keihin Plant in Yokohama. The company has also decided to eventually increase production capacity to cater to increasing demand for its product. AGC will be showcasing its range of its products under the concept of “Glass-as-a-Platform” at Display Week 2017. The annual display conference and exhibition will be held until May 26, 2017 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.
AGC Group’s car-mounted display cover glass will further enhance the sense of luxury and design of car interiors. Its anti-reflective surface treatment offers motorists several advantaged including better visibility and operability, and this has made the glass the material of choice for car navigation systems and information panels. AGC’s subsidiary, AGC Display Glass Yonezawa Co., Ltd. (ADY), had begun production of the flat-surfaced version of the product in 2013 on a dedicated production line, and had to increase the production capacity in April last year to cope with the growing demand for the product.
The AGC Group uses its proprietary technology for surface treatment of the new curved cover glass. This patented process comprises chemical strengthening treatment, optical thin-film coating, and surface printing. The finished product is one that takes vehicle interiors to a new level of sophistication. In-vehicle displays that offer larger and curved surfaces are expected to become increasingly popular in the future and AGC’s Keihin Plant has plans to increase its production capacity of curved cover glass for car-mounted displays in the coming years.
