Connected car services leader, Airbiquity, has recently announced its support for SmartDeviceLink (SDL), a content integration approach aimed at increasing carmaker access to infotainment applications for connected car programs with reduced implementation intricacy.
With the debut of automotive infotainment in 2011, content integration entailed the development of unique user interfaces for every content provider application. This enables customized app features and differentiated user experiences relative to market rivals. Since then, automotive infotainment has evolved and automakers have become interested in more standardized integration approaches that could maximize application availability while shortening development time.
SDL employs pre-defined templates that are shared between applications, and has recently been eyed as a promising contender for standardized content integration. While it is true that SDL does not reduce design intricacy for carmakers, it presents a number of trade-offs such as inability to support OTA software updates, minimized application policy management to reduce driver distractions and reduced cloud-based application management capabilities.
Carmakers that deploy infotainment programs utilizing SDL content can now have the best of both worlds by working with Airbiquity, which has reduced SDL application trade-offs by using its mobile integration technology, Choreo platform back-end-management features, and expertise in content integration. Now, the company can offer carmakers with SDL-enabled access to a portfolio of over 40 high-quality applications with improved features and functionality, OTA software updates and solid back-end application management and policy controls.
According to Kamyar Moinzadeh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airbiquity, the company has always been at the forefront of connected car infotainment, with extensive content provider relationships, five years of automotive integration experience, and several integration options to meet inpidual customer requirements. “Providing SDL-enabled access to our market-leading content portfolio—combined with Choreo’s back-end application management and over-the-air update capability—is an unbeatable package for automakers in today’s marketplace.”
Airbiquity’s Choreo™ service delivery platform offers flexible and scalable connected car service delivery from the cloud.
