Developed to meet purely functional requirements, they evolved over the years into modern icons while retaining their utilitarian origins: The Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Big Pilot’s Watch from IWC Schaffhausen share a similar story. These parallels are now distinctively expressed in the new Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 (Ref. 501201), the design of which is inspired by the recently launched Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition” (WLTP: fuel consumption combined: 16.0 l/100km, CO₂ emissions combined: 363 g/km)[1].
The special edition watch is characterised by the contrast of black and gold. In keeping with this, the case and crown of this exceptionally fine timepiece is made of 18-carat Armor Gold®. This innovative material has a modified microstructure, which makes the case significantly harder and more wear-resistant than made from conventional red gold. The combination of sand-blasted surfaces and polished edges gives the timepiece a top-class, contemporary character. The black dial is distinguished by a relief-effect technical texture inspired by the front grilles and air intakes of Mercedes-AMG performance cars. While the numerals and indices on the classic Big Pilot’s Watch are printed, the AMG G 63 edition features three-dimensional appliques. They are coated in black using PVD (physical vapor deposition – a vacuum-based form of thin-film technology) and filled with beige luminescent material. The white rings of the sub-dials for the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the power reserve at 3 o’clock mimic the headlights of the G-Class.
“In the 20th year of our partnership with Mercedes-AMG, we are adding another edition to our legendary line‑up of special Big Pilot’s Watches. Inspired by the typical design elements of the G-Class and the bold colour scheme of the recently launched Grand Edition, the striking design of the Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 is luxurious and almost exuberant.”
Christian Knoop, Chief Design Officer IWC Schaffhausen
The Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63 is available immediately through IWC boutiques, authorised retail partners, or online at IWC.com. In addition, the timepiece can be registered for the My IWC care program, benefitting from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty provided by IWC Schaffhausen.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition” – special model in matt black with gold-coloured accents
With the recently launched Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Grand Edition”, Mercedes-Benz is highlighting the exceptional status of the performance off-roader, which has been part of the legendary off-road family’s portfolio since 2002. Limited to 1,000 units, the special model is painted in MANUFAKTUR night black magno, with gold-coloured details creating an exciting visual contrast. They emphasise the particular design elements that trace the direct lineage of the modern off-road icon to the first G model from 1979. The “Grand Edition” of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 can be ordered as of now starting at 228,896.50 euros[2], including the expressive equipment package.
