Ian Callum, Director of Design for Jaguar, was honored with the prestigious ‘Icon Award’ at the 2019 edition of the London Classic Car Show which was held from February 14 to 17. The show is recognized as one of the leading events for those who are interested in classic cars, whether they are owners, collectors, experts or just those who have a soft spot for classic cars. Callum is acknowledged as one of the leading experts in the field of automotive design talents and this award recognized his illustrious career and the impact he has had on the automotive industry.
The fifth edition of the annual London Classic Car Show served as a platform to showcase some of Callum’s most stylish cars which served to define his career. They included the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE and the F-TYPE, which won the 2013 ‘World Car Design of the Year’ accolade. Some of the key models from his early years in the field include the Aston Martin DB7, Vanquish and Ford RS200 and these models were also on display.
On accepting the award, Ian Callum said that it was an honour to be chosen by The London Classic Car Show as its 2019 Icon and be recognized for his contribution to car design. He said that it was really special see such a large collection of the models he has worked on in one place as it has never happened before.
Event Director for The London Classic Car Show, Bas Bungish said Ian was an obvious choice for this year’s Icon in view of his incredible career so far which has contributed some of the most recognizable models that we see on the roads today and which might become classics in the future.
Ian Callum started his career at Ford Design Studios before moving on to become the Chief Designer of TWR Design. Callum played a key role in transforming Jaguar’s design aesthetic after he took on his role as the Director of Design in 1999.
This is not the first such award that Ian has received. In 2005, he received the title of Royal Designer for Industry from the RSA and in 2014 he received the Minerva Medal, which is the highest award given by the Chartered Society of Designers. He received the Minerva medal for a lifetime’s achievement in design. Callum continues to oversee a team of highly talented designers at Jaguar’s design studios in Coventry and has received six honorary doctorates from universities across the globe.
