Motion-sensing lights are not exactly fresh off the design board, but Ellum, a series of wood-crafted lights designed by Los Angeles-based designer Feltmark manages to veer away from the stodgy aesthetics that are the bane of prototypes. The lamp is the perfect aesthetic accessory to a minimalist oriental or occidental décor scheme with neutral lines, rich wood tones, and cordless attachment.
Ellum battery-powered wall lamps are crafted in gorgeous dark walnut and a warm white oak and do not need complex wiring or mounts. Independence from bracketed wall mounts means that the Ellum lamp only requires magnetized screws or adhesive dots—that are packaged with the lamp.
Under the hood, the lamp features two motion detectors that activate two white LED lights—52 lumens for the smaller light and 158 lumens for the larger model for 20 seconds when there is motion around the lamp. Ellum lamps are powered by 4 AA batteries for the compact 6-inch lamp and 8 AA batteries for its 22-inch nightlight cousin. The voltage produced by the battery pack is more than adequate to power the warm white LED lights that are fitted with a white acrylic diffuser, producing a soft, comforting glow that is directed downward to avoid any glare when used as a nightlight.
The twin motion detectors activate at a safe radius, illuminating your path without blinding you at night while the energy efficient LEDs ensure that you do not need to change batteries for at least six months. The use of batteries also means that you save power, and can rely on these exquisitely crafted lamps as emergency lights.
