Brembo, which is known for brightly colored brakes has announced that it has started working on the development of quieter brakes for its electric cars. The company’s brakes have even been used in supercars like Ferraris, but it will face challenges in the future era of mobility as more and more motorists become environmentally conscious and transition to electric cars. Without the roar of combustion engines, conventional brakes will prove to be noisy in the silent environment of an electrified vehicle. They can prove to be a distraction to motorists who might be enjoying the quietness of their battery powered vehicles.
With the rest of the automotive industry evolving at a fast pace, Brembo too will have to change its strategy to be up to speed. The company is hence working on the development of lighter, electrical brake-by-wire mechanisms which can be used in electric cars as a replacement for traditional hydraulic brakes. Companies that manufacture brakes are facing a challenge from the use of regenerative braking systems which are connected to the electronic brain of a vehicle and have the capability to recover the energy that is lost when cars decelerate and can supply it back to the battery. Motorists could eventually come to prefer the use of such instead of the traditional callipers, pads and discs.
Brembo is a family-owned company that was established back in 1961. The company’s list of clients includes leading brands like BMW, Mercedes, Tesla and even top Formula 1 teams.
Another company in this space that is moving into the era of future mobility is German auto components manufacturer ZF Friedrichshafen, which recently acquired Wabco in a USD 7 billion deal to strengthen its expertise in autonomous-driving technologies. In this new era, the interiors, comfort and infotainment features will be more important to motorists than performance and hence noise will definitely need to be kept to minimal levels.
