Evonik Industries has set up a new plant for the manufacture of precipitated silica in South Carolina, in southeastern United States. The silica produced by the plant will be supplied to the many tire factories located in the region. South Carolina is a hub for the tire industry in the United States with many tire manufacturers like Michelin, Giti, Bridgestone and Continental having factories in South Carolina. Evonik has invested a total amount of USD 120 million in the factory so that the company would be able to cater to the growing demand for its products in North America.
Commenting on the new plant, Harald Schwager, deputy chairman of the executive board of Evonik Industries said that the opening of the new production plant marks a significant step in reinforcing the company’s position as a global partner for the tire industry. He said that Evonik is following a clar strategy through the expansion of its silica business. Evonikk is not only taking over the activities of Huber Silica, but is also focusing on continually expanding its capacities for the material.
The main reason why Evonik opted for the site in South Carolina was its close proximity to tire manufacturers in the vicinity. Commenting on the factory’s location, Johannes Ohmer, member of the management board of Evonik Resource Efficiency, said that from this location, Evonik would be able to supply its local customers with innovative products and custom-tailored solutions.
Another product that Evonik will be making at its factory in South Carolina is the Ultrasil 7800 GR silica that it had developed recently. Ultrasil 7800 GR has a larger specific surface area and this gives the tread compound more rigidity without in any way compromising its processability. This makes the silica highly suitable for SUVs, for which there is high demand in the United States. The new facility is expected to create over 40 jobs.
