Japanese vehicle manufacturer Nissan won the ‘Excellence in Climate Solutions Award’. Nissan won the award on the basis of the effort it has made to develop electric vehicle technology and energy services systems. The awards are given every year as part of the FT/IFC Transformational Business Awards. These awards are given by the Financial Times and the International Finance Corp., a member of the World Bank Group.
The awards are meant to recognize groundbreaking, commercially viable solutions to global development challenges. Past winners of the award include the Cross-Boundary Energy Fund which operates in Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana and focuses on improving the efficiency of solar assets. Another past winner is the Piramal Foundation in India which leverages technology to give rural villages access to safe water.
Nissan has developed a vehicle-to-grid system that makes it possible for energy from electric cars to be fed back into the electricity grid, thus helping to make grid more stable and sustainable. Customers can also use the vehicle-to-grid system to manage their energy supply.
Another innovative solution Nissan developed was the reuse of spent batteries taken from Nissan Leaf and e-NV200 electric vehicles. These batteries are used as second-life energy storage systems for homes and other buildings.
Commenting on the award, Nissan’s executive vice president, Daniele Schillaci said that the recognition validated Nissan’s efforts to integrate EV technology into society.
Schillaci concluded, “From launching the first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, to developing vehicle-to-grid technology, we will continue leading the way toward a zero-emission future through Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”
