A BMW M5 has broken the world record for the longest continuous wet drift in the world. The feat covered 232.5 miles and it was conducted in tandem with another F10 M5 which housed a fuel rig for refueling the drift car. The BMW M5 was refueled five times during the record breaking feat. The creation of the record took eight long hours. Racing car driver Johan Schwartz performed the attempt to break the record while the refuel car was driven by another professional BMW precision driver, Matt Mullins. During the performance of the stunt, the vehicles had an average speed of 29mph.
The previous wet drift record was set by German driver Harald Müller. He used a Toyota GT86 to set a record of 89.55 miles in July 2014. The BMW M5 more than doubled this distance. BMW has attempted to set such records previously and was responsible for creating a record for the longest drift of 51.278 miles in 2013. This attempt was made using the previous variant of the M5.
The world record also created another record as the record breaking car and the refuel car drifted in tandem for 49.25 miles over one hour. This is the such longest twin-vehicle drift that was recorded by Guinness. Both cars had a custom refuelling system in order to enhance the safety and smoothness of refuelling during the record attempt. Schwartz said of his record breaking feat that it was important to keep the M5 going without having to stop for refueling if they were to have a realistic go at recapturing the world record for the longest sustained drift. He said that in the end, the refueling system worked flawlessly so that the M5 performed as expected. The record braking attempt proved to be another win for BMW on all possible fronts.
