HELLA Aglaia And NXP to add AI to Open Vision Platform For Safe Automated Driving

Hella Aglaia and NXP will be adding AI (Artificial Intelligence) capability to their current advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) car vision platform in 2018. HELLA Aglaia has ADAS platforms which have NXP’s S32 and i.MX auto-grade processors as components to provide motorists with safe, scalable and complete range of front vision NCAP functionality and OEMs use these for deployment when it comesto production of volume cars.

The two companies are taking their collaboration one step further by adding artificial intelligence for automated driving to this modular structure. Thus, automotive manufacturers and system integrators will benefit from a high degree of design flexibility while remaining compliant with stringent Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) requirements.

Many of the vision platforms that are currently available are closed and proprietary, and this serves as a barrier for further software integration. For car manufacturers and system integrators, this means that they have less room for innovation as they are unable to combine the best available sensor technology with software sources in the market.

HELLA’s collaboration with NXP and their efforts for joint development are base don the premise that camera-based platforms should be open and safe in order to enable NCAP functions and level 3 to 5 automated driving.

Commenting on the initiative, Kamal Khouri, general manager and vice president of ADAS, NXP Semiconductors said that it is very complex to safely replace the combined senses of a human motorists. This demands the best hardware, software and acceleration technology that the industry has to offer. Hella Aglaia has immense expertise in ADAS software and hence combines well with NXP’s innovative and leading semiconductor solutions.
