Test Confirms Effectiveness of BlueHDi SCR Tech

Preliminary results of Peugeot 208 and 508 model testing by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy conform to new regulations, thanks to a change in the technology. The automaker says that the results confirm the effectiveness of the BlueHDi after-treatment system for diesel exhaust.

In the technology, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is positioned upstream of the particulate filter to remove up to 9 percent of the nitrogen (NOx) emitted by the diesel engine. This reduces NOx emissions to levels similar to gasoline engines, while maintaining the diesel engine advantage of greater fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.

The BlueHDi system has been employed on select diesel-powered vehicles from Peugeot Citroen since 2013. It has been progressively added as standard equipment on diesel models sold as Euro 6 compliant.

The state-of-the-art SCR technology embodies an investment of hundred million euros and some 100 technology patents. This new testing verifies that the system complies with 2017 Euro 6.2 standards. There are three key elements to the BlueHDi system, which includes a diesel particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst and SCR technology.

With the oxidation catalyst mounted against the engine, it converts unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and CO into water and CO2. NOx conversion into nitrogen and water is done by the SCR using AdBlue, a typical urea treatment. Its change is its enhancement of the engine tuning to favor consumption and performance. The diesel particulate filter reduces 99.9 percent of the particulate number.

As the testing continues, more test results are anticipated.
